[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump stated in general terms, regarding the possibility of Russian investment in the Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, that “there will be economic cooperation with Russia once the war in Ukraine is over.”
On the 24th (local time), after early voting at a polling place in Palm Beach County, Florida, President Trump answered reporters’ questions and said, “I want Russia and Ukraine to reach an agreement and return to normal, so that we can do business with both sides.” However, he did not state a specific position on Russia’s investment in the Alaska LNG project itself.
The previous day, the U.S.-based New York Times (NYT) reported that “the United States and Russia are said to have recently discussed ways to cooperate on the Alaska LNG development project during negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.” According to the report, a Russian energy company under U.S. sanctions is secretly funding the Alaska LNG development project, and there is speculation that Russia is seeking sanctions relief in return for providing technology and funding.
President Trump also highlighted his wife Melania’s role in mediating Russia and Ukraine’s agreement to stop fighting in Oleshky, a city in southern Ukraine, saying, “Melania spoke with the leaders of both countries.” He praised her, saying, “Melania does better than the experts,” and left open the possibility of her visiting Ukraine in the future.
