[Financial News] Samsung Group is expected to expand to major affiliates a system for regularly reporting its pool of CEO succession candidates to the board. The move is seen as an effort to improve management continuity and governance transparency by systematically developing and managing next-generation executives and strengthening the board’s oversight of management.
On the 25th, according to industry sources, Samsung’s major electronics affiliates, including Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung SDI, are expected to take up “Report on the CEO Succession Candidate Pool” as a formal agenda item at board meetings this week, ahead of announcements of third- and fourth-quarter results.
Samsung Group is expanding across the group a system for managing CEO succession candidates that had previously been operated at some affiliates. Since 2022, Samsung Electronics and Samsung C&T have operated a system under which the pool of CEO succession candidates is reported to the board once a year. At a board meeting held on October 30 last year, Samsung Electronics also listed related information as an item for reporting.
Similar systems are also in place at financial affiliates. Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung Card, among others, report to their boards on the status of CEO candidate-pool management and the results of reviews of the adequacy of their management succession plans.
The expansion of the reporting framework is seen as a measure to increase transparency in the CEO appointment process and strengthen board-centered responsible management. It is also expected to help reduce the risk of a leadership gap and secure business continuity over the medium to long term by regularly reviewing the capabilities of next-generation leadership candidates and progress in developing them.
The expansion of executive succession management beyond some affiliates to major electronics affiliates is also seen as aligning with Samsung Group’s efforts to improve its governance. In effect, it broadens the institutional basis for the board to remain involved in executive appointments and succession.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics and its major affiliates are expected to carry out their regular year-end appointments of top executives in mid-to-late next month.
To respond to the AI industry's rapid growth and changes in the global business environment, attention is focused on how to assemble an executive team that can boost the competitiveness of key businesses, including semiconductors, and lead future growth businesses. This year’s appointments are expected to place particular weight on business performance in key areas, as well as execution in new businesses such as AI and the ability to secure technological competitiveness.
