[Financial News] Two middle school students stole items worth about 300,000 won, including flowers and an umbrella, from an unmanned flower shop in Daejeon. One of them reportedly left a comment saying “That’s me” on CCTV footage released by the owner. The students’ parents also reportedly canceled their visit after promising to apologize.
According to JTBC’s “Scandal Supervisor” on the 23rd, A, who has run a flower shop in Seo-gu, Daejeon, for 10 years, realized after returning from the flower market on August 30 that flowers had gone missing from the shop. When A checked the CCTV at the shop, which had been operating without staff for two years, the footage showed two students putting flowers into a bag and taking them away. The students also took A’s umbrella, and left socks and toys in the shop.
A, who reported the incident to police, captured images from the CCTV footage and posted them on social media (SNS). The following day, August 31, A received information about the SNS account of the student who had been wearing white and passed it on to police. The student even commented “That’s me” on A’s post.
The mother of one of the students contacted A, asking to delete the video and promising to come with her child to apologize. However, she said her daughter had left home and not returned, and that she would come alone. She later postponed the visit, citing work and other circumstances. In the end, the mother reportedly told A, “I’ve given up on my child. I don’t care whether the child goes to jail or not; I won’t take responsibility.” The parents of the other student also canceled their promise to visit.
Disappointed by the response from the students and their parents, A decided to file a civil lawsuit. Police told A that both students were under 14 and fell into the category of juveniles exempt from criminal punishment. They also told A that the case would be referred to the juvenile division of the family court along with another related case.
