[Financial News] A recent poll conducted ahead of the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for the 3rd of next month found that many U.S. voters have a negative view of democratic socialist politics spreading into their communities.
A poll released on the 23rd (local time) by the nonprofit political news outlet The Center Square and conducted by polling firm Noble Predictive Insights, titled “Voice of the Voter,” found that 44% of registered U.S. voters said, “I want to live in a city or community where democratic socialists have not gained influence.”
By contrast, only 33% said, “I want my community to move in the direction of places where democratic socialist candidates have secured influence,” while 23% said they were “not sure.”
The poll was conducted roughly two weeks before elections across the country in which democratic socialist candidates would be running and their related platforms would be on the ballot. It found that 55% of U.S. voters were concerned about democratic socialist candidates running for and winning public office, while 37% said they were not concerned.
Of the respondents who expressed concern (55%), 35% said they were “very concerned” and 20% “somewhat concerned.” Among those who said they were not concerned (37%), 17% said they were “not very concerned” and 20% “not at all concerned.”
These results track the growing profile and strength of democratic socialist politicians across the United States. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) said a total of 160 candidates had run nationwide this year.
An earlier poll conducted by The Center Square last August found that 63% of Americans were “concerned about the spread of socialism or communism in U.S. politics,” confirming that U.S. voters remain wary of the growing influence of democratic socialists.
As democratic socialists gain strength with the support of progressive lawmakers such as independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, strong warnings are coming not only from Republicans but also from within the Democratic Party.
Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has recently spoken out against the rise of democratic socialist forces within his party. Citing a CBS News poll that found nearly 60% of Democrats held a positive view of socialism, Fetterman sharply criticized the trend on social media, saying, “The Democratic Party is becoming the party of socialists. I’m a proud free-market capitalist, and this situation is insane.”
Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville also called on the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to remove the word “Democratic” from its name, so the party could distance itself from leftward policies.
Such concerns are also close to a majority among Democratic Party supporters. According to the latest poll by The Center Square, 49% of Democratic-leaning voters said they were concerned about the rise of socialism or communism, exceeding the 40% who said they were not concerned.
Ahead of the election, many democratic socialist candidates across the country, including in New York, Colorado, Michigan, California and Florida, have won Democratic primaries and advanced to the general election.
The poll was conducted from October 5 to 7 among 2,527 registered voters nationwide (1,136 Republicans, 1,171 Democrats and 220 unaffiliated voters) via online panels and text messages. The margin of error is ±2.0 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
