U.S. President Donald Trump on the 23rd (local time) canceled some of the 50% tariffs imposed on imports from Canada. The move is intended to support Susan Collins, who is struggling in Maine’s U.S. Senate race. Maine is highly dependent on trade with Canada, and Trump’s tariffs on Canada have emerged as an election issue there.
According to NBC and other U.S. media outlets, the Trump administration exempted some Canadian products from the 50% tariffs that day. The move is seen as Trump effectively acknowledging that his sweeping tariffs are hurting Republican candidates in the midterm elections on November 3.
Collins, who is struggling in the Senate race, was the first to announce on her social media that some import tariffs had been waived. “I’m pleased to announce that additional tariff exemptions have been secured for products vital to Maine’s agricultural industry, including blueberries, potatoes, apples and seaweed products,” Collins said. She added that plastic crates, large wooden crates, packing materials, refrigeration equipment, finishing and labeling machinery, packaging equipment, film, foil and seaweed products would be exempt from tariffs.
The White House also confirmed this on its own website.
