U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 23rd (local time) that he might launch a relatively small-scale military operation against Iran compared with Operation Epic Fury.
“Operation Epic Fury” was the name given to the operation when the United States and Israel launched large-scale airstrikes against Iran on February 28. The strikes hit Iran’s capital, Tehran, among other targets, eliminating top Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei.
President Trump signaled that day that he might launch further military operations against Iran while campaigning in support of the midterm elections in Fort Myers, Florida. He said, “If they’re smart, they’ll say, ‘Let’s negotiate in earnest now,’” and also suggested that the warning of military action could be intended to pressure Iran into coming to the negotiating table.
Trump then also brought up Cuba. He said, “On my way back from Iran, I’ll take care of Cuba, too,” and said he would have one of the warships returning after the attacks on Iran dock off the Cuban coast.
Trump said, “I’ll anchor one about 50 yards (about 46 meters) off the coast of Cuba,” adding, “Then they (Cuba) will throw up their hands and surrender.” He stressed that he would “send Marco Rubio to finish the job,” referring to the Cuban-American U.S. secretary of state.
