[Financial News] A man in his 40s who was released after a court rejected a warrant for his arrest was caught by police just four days later while attempting another jewelry store robbery involving tens of millions of won.
Yeosu Police Station in South Jeolla Province said on the 23rd that it had urgently arrested and was questioning a man in his 40s identified as A on suspicion of theft, and an acquaintance in their 40s identified as B on suspicion of aiding the crime and helping A evade capture.
A is suspected of stealing jewelry worth around 30 million won from a jewelry store in Yeoseo-dong, Yeosu, South Jeolla Province, at around 1 p.m. on the 21st. He allegedly pretended to be a customer, tried on gold necklaces and bracelets, then ran straight out of the store. Immediately after the theft, A fled in a car belonging to B, who had been waiting nearby. In the early hours of the same day, police pursuing them caught them hiding at lodging establishments in Suncheon and Gwangyang, respectively. Investigators found that A had already disposed of the stolen jewelry and squandered all the proceeds on illegal online gambling.
The problem is that this was not A’s first offense. On the 15th, A had also stolen jewelry worth about 33 million won from a jewelry store in Chungmu-dong, Yeosu, using the same method, and fled before being caught by police. Police had sought a detention warrant, citing the seriousness of the case, but the court rejected it, saying there was “no risk of flight or destruction of evidence.”
After the court rejected the warrant, A walked free and committed a second offense just four days later, this time with an accomplice in tow. Police plan to seek detention warrants for A and B after investigating the exact circumstances of the case and any further offenses.
