[Financial News] A story has sparked outrage online after the owner of a car allegedly yelled at a young child and demanded 300,000 won in cash and a bodily injury insurance claim after the child lightly hit a neighboring car while opening a door in what is known as a “door-ding” incident.
On the 21st, a post titled “Request to file a bodily injury claim over a door ding...” was uploaded to the online community Bobaedream.
According to the post’s author, A, an acquaintance was recently taking their child home by car when, as the child was getting out, they opened the door and hit the car beside them, causing a minor collision. The acquaintance, who was driving, did not notice it right away. But the woman driving the damaged car rolled down her window and shouted, “Hey, ma’am! Raise your kids properly!”
The man who then got out of the other car’s passenger seat acted even more aggressively. He roughly yanked open the rear door where the child was sitting and shouted threateningly at the child: “Hey! Open the door properly!”, “You made the whole car shake back and forth!”, and “Raise your kid properly!” Frightened by the adult’s harsh yelling and the door being slammed shut, the child could not stop crying until the other party left.
After being contacted, A arrived at the scene, apologized repeatedly, and promised to use personal liability insurance or reimburse the actual costs. But when A’s husband arrived afterward and tried to inspect the damaged area, the other party raised their voices and pointed fingers, saying, “Your child was in the wrong, and now you’re trying to argue with us?”
The incident escalated to the point that police and an insurer’s emergency response staff were called to the scene. While the police comforted the crying child, the other party said they could not let the matter go because of A and their spouse’s attitude, and demanded not only a property damage claim but also a bodily injury claim, citing the female passenger’s fright.
The other car owner’s excessive demands continued the following day. The next day, they sent a final notice through the insurance company: “Since it’s a new car, we won’t have it repaired with repainting or bodywork, so pay 300,000 won in cash in lieu of repairs, and file a bodily injury claim as well.”
A said, “It was clearly wrong of the child to be careless, and I fully understood that the other party was upset because it was a new car, so I said I would cover all the costs.” But A lamented, “An adult yelling threateningly at a young child is not discipline; it is clearly a threat.” A added, “I can pay 300,000 won for repairs, but I find it impossible to accept filing a bodily injury claim over a door ding, so I plan to refuse.”
People online who read the story strongly criticized the other car owner’s behavior. They reacted angrily, saying things like, “Demanding a bodily injury claim over a door ding is close to a typical insurance fraud scheme,” “Claiming someone was injured in a simple door ding—not even a collision while driving—is beyond common sense,” and “An adult opening a car door and verbally abusing a young child should be countersued for emotional child abuse.”
Traffic accident experts say that in minor door-ding incidents while parked, the impact is not strong enough to cause bodily injury, making it difficult to establish liability for bodily injury compensation. In past related broadcasts, expert lawyers have also warned that anyone who seeks a false bodily injury claim or tries to obtain treatment costs despite not being injured, for emotional revenge or financial gain, could face criminal penalties for violating the Special Act on Prevention of Insurance Fraud or be charged with extortion.
