【Financial News Jeju = Jeong Yong-bok】 A total of 3,029 cases of illegal parking and stopping near fire hydrants have been detected in Jeju over the past three years.
According to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Fire Safety Headquarters on the 23rd, a coordinated crackdown on illegal parking and stopping near fire hydrants was carried out the previous afternoon, with fire officials, enforcement officers from administrative cities, and volunteer firefighters taking part.
The crackdown targeted vehicles parked or stopped within 5 meters of fire water supply facilities, including hydrants. Twelve violations were detected, and the administrative cities plan to impose a total of 960,000 won in fines under relevant laws and regulations.
Hundreds of cases of illegal parking and stopping near fire hydrants are detected in Jeju each year. Enforcement figures for the past three years were 985 cases in 2023, 1,167 in 2024, and 877 in 2025.
The number of cases detected last year fell by 290 (24.9%) from the previous year, but still exceeded 800 for the year.

A fire hydrant is a facility that fire engines use to obtain the water needed to fight a fire. If vehicles are parked nearby, access for fire engines and the connection of fire hoses can be delayed, hampering initial firefighting efforts.
Article 32 of the Road Traffic Act prohibits both parking and stopping within 5 meters of fire water supply facilities, including hydrants. In areas with safety signs, violators face fines of 80,000 won for passenger cars and 90,000 won for vans.
Unlike ordinary no-parking zones, stopping a vehicle even briefly is prohibited around firefighting facilities. In particular, areas marked with signs prohibiting parking and stopping around firefighting facilities are subject to higher fines than those for ordinary parking and stopping violations.
The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters plans to continue joint crackdowns with relevant agencies, including the administrative cities, and step up guidance and public awareness efforts about the ban on parking and stopping near firefighting facilities.
Park Jin-su, chief of the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters, said, “Illegal parking and stopping near fire hydrants can hinder the rapid securing of firefighting water when a fire breaks out, potentially threatening the lives and property of Jeju residents,” and urged the public, “Please be sure to refrain from parking or stopping within 5 meters of fire hydrants.”
