[Financial News] Samsung Biologics is surging around 8%, buoyed by easing concerns about production disruptions from a union strike, strong earnings and hopes for a recovery in new orders.
Alongside analysis that the court’s expansion of the scope of prohibited union action could ease the burden of a strike, increased production capacity and earnings contributions from U.S. facilities appear to be lifting growth expectations.
According to the Korea Exchange, as of 2:06 p.m. on the 23rd, Samsung Biologics was trading at 1,471,000 won, up 110,000 won (8.08%) from the previous trading day. Shares extended their gains during the session, rising above the 1.47 million won mark. Trading volume stood at 111,175 shares.
Even though labor-management tensions have not been fully resolved, expectations that concerns about strike-related production disruptions may ease are supporting investor sentiment.
The court initially restricted only some production processes in the first-instance ruling, but in its latest appellate ruling it prohibited industrial action across all nine production processes the company had sought to cover.
The ruling took into account the specialized nature of biopharmaceutical production processes, their effects on the national economy and industry, and the enormous losses and safety concerns that could arise if production were disrupted.
The union has promised a “new fight” in response and is urging participation in a second strike. However, with strike participation reportedly falling sharply, some observers say concerns about production disruptions may be lower than before.
Analysts say that easing strike concerns could allay clients’ anxiety and lead to a recovery in new orders.
Researcher Heo Hye-min of KIWOOM Securities said, “The union’s second strike at Samsung Biologics was postponed after the court issued an injunction expanding the scope of prohibited industrial action beyond that set in the lower court’s ruling.” She added, “I believe this decision will ease clients’ concerns about production disruptions and also have a positive effect on securing new orders.”
Earnings are also supporting the share price. Samsung Biologics’ third-quarter consolidated revenue was 1.4903 trillion won, up 18.5% from a year earlier. Operating profit rose 1.0% to 640.1 billion won. Both revenue and operating profit were reportedly above market expectations.
Expanded production capacity and earnings contributions from U.S. facilities are also bolstering medium- to long-term growth expectations. Plants 1 through 4 continue to operate at full capacity, while Plant 5 is making an increasing contribution to production. Revenue also reflects results from the acquired Rockville plant in the United States. Taking the Rockville plant’s performance and other factors into account, the company raised its full-year revenue growth forecast from 15–20% to 20%.
In the contract development and manufacturing (CDMO) business, reliable production and meeting delivery deadlines influence clients’ contract-award decisions. Analysts say that easing labor-management tensions, together with expanded production capacity, could also help secure new contracts.
