[Financial News]   Han Byung-do, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, pushed back on the People Power Party’s opposition to investigative agency chiefs sitting in on Cabinet meetings and its criticism of their attendance, calling it “comedy, plain and simple.”

Han said this at the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day: “The People Power Party is nitpicking the investigative agency chiefs’ attendance at Cabinet meetings and going on about independence, neutrality and fairness.”
He criticized the argument, saying, “If they attend Cabinet meetings, the independence of investigations is compromised, but if they don’t, is it protected? What kind of outlandish logic is that?”

He went on to stress, “Have you already forgotten how, under the Yoon Suk Yeol administration, the prosecution and police were reduced to handmaidens of those in power? Yoon Suk Yeol and the People Power Party may have manipulated the power agencies to suit themselves, but the Lee Jae-myung administration and the Democratic Party are different.”

Han also argued, “Transparent oversight through livestreamed Cabinet meetings is a hundred, even a thousand times better for ensuring political neutrality than directing prosecution investigations over an encrypted phone and mobilizing the police for an insurrection.”

He urged, “The People Power Party should first reflect on its own past wrongs in undermining the independence and neutrality of investigative agencies. If it isn’t dreaming of the return of a politicized prosecution, it should stop its baseless nitpicking and obstruction and cooperate responsibly in establishing the new criminal justice system.” Photo and video: Seo Dong-il
