SK Eco supports safe crossings with smart crosswalks

[Financial News] SK ecoplant is using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help improve conditions for children commuting to school in local communities. The company plans to install smart crosswalks and Yellow Carpets, among other things, to support safe crossings. SK ecoplant said on the 23rd that it had recently held a completion ceremony for the “AI Smart Crosswalk and Yellow Carpet Installation Project” at Baegam Elementary School in Baegam-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin Special City, Gyeonggi Province.
The AI smart crosswalk is a facility that uses artificial intelligence video analysis and traffic safety technology to detect and analyze in real time the movements of pedestrians and vehicles, the status of pedestrian signals, and conditions around the crosswalk. If it detects that a pedestrian remains on the crosswalk or that a child, an older adult, or another vulnerable road user is crossing, it automatically extends the pedestrian signal, warns of approaching vehicles, and provides alerts about unexpected situations, among other functions.
A Yellow Carpet is a traffic safety facility that marks the ground and walls at a crosswalk entrance in yellow or installs yellow structures to encourage children to wait for the signal in a safe area. It helps drivers easily identify children and waiting areas near crosswalks, encouraging them to slow down and drive cautiously. For this project, SK ecoplant helped secure the funding needed and worked with the local community and relevant organizations.
A representative of SK ecoplant said, “We will continue our social contribution activities, paying close attention to the issues local communities need addressed and bringing about tangible change.”
