[Financial News] An engaged couple and a photographer were spotted taking wedding photos atop the burial mound of a Baekje-era tomb, a cultural heritage site, prompting dismay.
A video showing an engaged couple and a photographer taking wedding photos at Tomb No. 1 of the Majeon Tomb Complex in Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, North Jeolla Province, was posted on social media on the 21st.
They had climbed to the top of the burial mound of a stone-coffin tomb and were taking photos, changing their poses.
A, who posted the video, described what happened, saying, “I’d seen dogs climb up without knowing any better, but when I saw fully grown adults doing it for quite a while, I contacted Wansan-gu Office.”
A added, “Officials from the Korea Heritage Service called to check whether the wedding photos had in fact been taken on top of the tomb.”
Signs and a fence are reportedly installed at the site. A criticized them, saying, “Of course, it’s absolutely not allowed (to climb up there). Would they not have known? They must have known.”

Under Article 101 of the Cultural Heritage Protection Act, climbing onto a burial mound may be punishable by up to two years in prison or a fine of up to 20 million won.
However, the tomb is a recreated heritage site reconstructed based on historical research, and it is reportedly unclear whether legal action can be taken because the Cultural Heritage Protection Act is difficult to apply.
Jeonju-si’s National Heritage Management Division says it has been actively conducting public guidance efforts, but enforcement is difficult because the site is a recreated heritage site with no separate penalties.
