[Financial News] Hyundai Motor Company’s County Electric has been selected as the first electric bus for Bali, one of Indonesia’s leading tourist destinations. Following its supply of electric buses to Surabaya in 2024, Hyundai is expanding service to Bali, strengthening its position in the local eco-friendly public transportation market. Hyundai plans to step up its push into the electric commercial vehicle market across the Asia-Pacific region, using Indonesia as a base.
Hyundai Motor Company said on the 23rd that it had supplied 11 County Electric buses to the Bali provincial government at the launch ceremony for the Electric Bus and Charging Infrastructure Deployment Project, held on the 22nd (local time) at Bali’s Independence Monument in Indonesia.
The event was attended by Kim Young-shin, executive director of Hyundai Motor Company’s Commercial Vehicle Body Integration Development Office; Yoon Soon-gu, South Korea’s ambassador to Indonesia; Indonesian Minister of National Development Planning Rachmat Pambudy; Bali Governor Wayan Koster; and Rowan Fraser, head of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Indonesia office, among others.
The project is part of an official development assistance (ODA) initiative undertaken by South Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the Indonesian government. With a total budget of 9.2 billion won, it aims to establish an eco-friendly public transportation system in Bali by providing electric buses and charging infrastructure. Hyundai Motor Company is responsible for supplying the buses, while South Korean charging company Chaebi will build the fast-charging infrastructure.
Hyundai Motor Company was selected as the final supplier after its competitiveness in electric vehicle quality, after-sales service capabilities and experience with eco-friendly ODA projects were recognized in an open tender organized by GGGI in October last year.
The County Electric buses being supplied to Bali are 20-seat, medium-sized electric buses built in collaboration with a local vehicle conversion company. Equipped with a 128-kWh battery, they can travel at least 200 km on a full charge. Their 150-kW high-output motor also delivers acceleration performance that is more than 30% higher than that of diesel models in the 50–80 km/h speed range.
Hyundai Motor Company plans to continue monitoring vehicle operations and provide local maintenance support after delivering the buses. These measures are intended to ensure stable operations during the initial period and support the electrification of local public transportation.
Hyundai Motor Company is also increasing its record of electric bus deliveries in Indonesia. In November 2024, it supplied 11 County Electric buses for public transportation in Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city. Including the latest delivery to Bali, a total of 22 electric buses have been deployed in the two areas. The company plans to expand deliveries to major Indonesian cities such as Jakarta and seek business opportunities in the Asia-Pacific market.
A Hyundai Motor Company representative said, “It is meaningful to contribute to the transition to eco-friendly transportation in Bali, one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, by supplying electric buses,” adding, “Building on the business experience we have gained in Indonesia, we will continue to expand our electric commercial vehicle business in key markets.”
