[Financial News] Leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) linked to SK hynix plunged about 89% from their record highs as the company’s share price fell. Do Kyung-wan, a former announcer turned TV personality, also said he had invested in a leveraged SK hynix product and recorded a return of -40%.
According to the Korea Exchange and other sources on the 23rd, the KODEX SK Hynix Single Stock Leverage ETF had closed on the 22nd at 4,885 won, down 585 won (10.69%) from the previous trading day. It had surged 12.09% on the 21st, but fell more than 10% again on the next trading day.
Mirae Asset Global Investments’ TIGER SK Hynix Single Stock Leverage ETF also fell sharply that day. It closed at 4,120 won, down 515 won (11.11%) from the previous trading day.
Compared with their 52-week highs, both products had fallen to about one-tenth of their peak prices. The KODEX SK Hynix Single Stock Leverage ETF was down 89.0% from its high of 44,385 won. The TIGER SK Hynix Single Stock Leverage ETF had also plunged 89.1% from its 52-week high of 37,775 won.
As semiconductor leveraged products plunged in price, Do Kyung-wan’s investment experience also came to light. He said he holds a leveraged product linked to SK hynix.
On the 22nd, in an episode of the KBS2 variety show “Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant,” Do Kyung-wan was checking his stock account first thing in the morning when he sighed and said, “Why is Hynix falling? I even bought a leveraged product.”
He also revealed his investment losses himself. “I shouldn’t have gotten in. My return is minus 40%,” he said. “I got into another stock at 490,000 won, and now it’s at 290,000 won. I lost 400,000 won elsewhere, too.”
However, the name of the leveraged product Do Kyung-wan actually bought, the specific stocks he invested in, and when he bought them have not been disclosed. It is also unclear when the show was filmed, making it difficult to directly link his reported loss to recent ETF price movements.
Individual investors also appear to have incurred large losses on single-stock leveraged products tied to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
Documents submitted by the Financial Supervisory Service to People Power Party lawmakers Park Sung-hoon and Park Jun-tae, members of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea’s National Policy Committee, and others, show that individual investors who invested in single-stock leveraged exchange-traded products (ETPs) tied to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix lost 6.313 trillion won between May 27 and August 14. The documents were obtained on the 22nd.
Of the total losses, realized trading losses from selling the products amounted to 2.3242 trillion won. Mark-to-market losses on products investors still held were found to total 3.9888 trillion won.
