Violent protests have spread to Italy as workers’ strikes break out one after another in various parts of the country, adding to anti-government demonstrations over high prices and other issues.
According to local news agency ANSA and other outlets on the 21st (local time), Italian truck drivers have been protesting fuel price increases for a week, mainly around Naples. Diesel prices in Italy are currently about 30% higher than before the situation in the Middle East. A temporary cut in the diesel tax ended early this month.
Truck protesters completely blocked the loading and unloading of fresh food and other goods at a supermarket distribution warehouse near Naples. With some stockpiling also taking place, shelves at some supermarkets in the Naples area began to empty.
Matteo Salvini, Italy’s deputy prime minister and minister of infrastructure and transport, met with freight transport associations the previous day to discuss tax credits and support for transport costs, among other measures.
Employees at Milan’s La Scala, one of the world’s five leading opera houses, have also been on strike since the 12th, demanding higher wages and improved working conditions.
