[Financial News] Yonsei University is considering filing a criminal complaint against an applicant caught wearing smart glasses equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) during an early admissions essay exam.
According to materials submitted by Yonsei University to the office of Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Ko Min-jung on the 22nd, among other sources, the university is considering filing a criminal complaint against the applicant on suspicion of obstructing business through deceptive means. Yonsei said, “We will respond firmly, applying a zero-tolerance principle to acts that undermine fairness and trust in admissions.”
An applicant identified as A was caught wearing smart glasses during the 2027 academic year mathematics essay exam for the natural sciences and integrated tracks, held on the 10th at Yonsei University’s Sinchon Campus in Seodaemun District, Seoul. The university believes A wore ordinary glasses before the exam and switched to smart glasses during it.
An invigilator found A’s behavior suspicious and confiscated the glasses. A reportedly admitted after the exam that they had brought smart glasses into the exam venue.
Yonsei plans to void A’s exam and disqualify the applicant, while also restricting A’s eligibility to apply through early admissions for the 2028 academic year.
Smart glasses are devices that can photograph exam questions with a small camera and connect to AI to provide solution processes or answers. The Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation also designated smart glasses as items prohibited from being brought into exam venues for the 2027 College Scholastic Ability Test.
At the University of Seoul, two applicants were also caught wearing or carrying smart glasses during a natural sciences essay exam on the 3rd. They were ordered to leave and barred from taking exams for the next three years.
