[Financial News] The government stepped up its response to cyber threats after a serious security vulnerability was discovered in PHP, a programming language widely used on websites around the world. After raising the private-sector cyber crisis alert from 'Attention' to 'Caution,' Cheong Wa Dae also began reviewing the civilian-government-military response system.
On the 22nd, the Office of National Security held an emergency meeting on civilian-government-military cybersecurity measures, chaired by Song Gi-ho, the Office's third deputy director, to discuss sector-by-sector responses to the PHP security vulnerability and follow-up measures.
Director-general-level officials from agencies responsible for responding to cyber crises across the civilian, government and military sectors, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of National Defense and the National Intelligence Service, attended the meeting.
Attendees checked how PHP was being used in the private, public and defense sectors and reviewed progress on security measures. They focused in particular on ways to apply security updates early and temporary measures to protect websites where immediate updates are difficult. They also discussed inspection measures to determine whether external intrusions had already taken place.
The Office of National Security plans to continue checking with relevant agencies whether security responses are being properly implemented and to consider whether additional measures are needed depending on how the cyber threat develops.
