The Korea Transportation Safety Authority and Daegu University held a signing ceremony on the 22nd for an agreement on “design cooperation for tuning culture and regional talent development.” Korea Transportation Safety Authority.

[Financial News] Daegu University students will create promotional materials to improve awareness of vehicle tuning using generative artificial intelligence (AI) and design tools. The Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS) will provide information on tuning regulations and safety standards, as well as expert advice. The completed works will be displayed to the public at the TS Tuning Safety Technology Institute and the Tuning Car Festival.
According to TS on the 22nd, the authority signed an agreement with Daegu University that afternoon on cooperation in tuning-culture design and regional talent development. The signing ceremony was attended by Lee Young-ju, head of TS’s Vehicle Inspection Headquarters, and Jang Jung-hyeok, head of Daegu University’s Anchor Project Group, among others. The aim is to combine the authority’s expertise in tuning with the university’s design capabilities to broaden public understanding of tuning culture and foster local design talent. Tuning refers to changing a vehicle’s structure or components, or adding accessories, to alter its performance or appearance while remaining within safety standards.
The two organizations will cooperate in four areas: developing local design talent, linking with exhibitions and events, creating promotional materials about tuning culture, and student-participatory design projects. Daegu University will organize design projects involving students directly and take charge of producing the promotional materials. TS will provide the university with materials on tuning testing and certification, safety standards, and related regulations. It will also offer expert advice during production and help review the finished work.
Students’ works will be displayed in a gallery-style space at the TS Tuning Safety Technology Institute and featured onstage at the Tuning Car Festival. The authority says the initiative is intended to give the public an up-close experience of tuning culture and allow students to gain early exposure to real-world design work.
The Tuning Safety Technology Institute, which will host the exhibition, is a specialized testing facility for vehicle tuning that opened in Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, in January 2024. It conducts precision tests across 41 items in three test buildings. Around 30,000 people attended the 2025 Korea Tuning Car Festival, held on September 26–27 last year in and around the institute.
Improving awareness of tuning is seen as a priority because illegal modifications have been slow to decline. TS vehicle safety enforcement recorded 7,282 cases of illegal modifications in 2024, up 17% from the previous year’s 6,211. The authority also operates programs to lower barriers to legal tuning, including allowing vehicles fitted with performance-verified “tuning safety-certified parts” to complete tuning through electronic registration alone, without separate approval or inspection.
TS President Jeong Yong-sik said, “This agreement is meaningful because it creates an opportunity for the public to encounter vehicle tuning more easily and familiarly,” adding, “We will expand promotion and exhibitions that make use of the university’s creative design capabilities, and do our utmost to foster local talent.”
