[Financial News] A total of 37 heads of public corporations and quasi-government agencies were appointed from the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration through September this year, according to figures. That is seven more than in the same period after the Yoon Suk Yeol administration took office. Amid recent criticism from some quarters of the political sphere over delays in appointing public institution heads, the number of appointments was found to exceed that under the previous administration.
According to personnel data on heads of public corporations and quasi-government agencies submitted by the Ministry of Finance and Economy to Yoon Hoo-deok, a lawmaker with the Democratic Party of Korea, on the 22nd, a total of 37 heads had been appointed from the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration through September 30. Fifteen headed public corporations and 22 headed quasi-government agencies.
During the same period after taking office, the Yoon Suk Yeol administration appointed a total of 30 heads: nine at public corporations and 21 at quasi-government agencies. The Lee Jae-myung administration appointed seven more overall (23.3%). Limiting the comparison to public corporation heads, it appointed six more (66.7%).
Institutions where heads appointed under previous administrations remain in office also accounted for more than half of the total. As of September 30 this year, heads appointed under the Yoon Suk Yeol or Moon Jae-in administrations were serving at 44 (50.6%) of the 87 public corporations and quasi-government agencies. At 23 of these institutions, the heads were found to have at least one year remaining in their statutory terms.
Yoon said, "Even if a considerable number of heads are newly appointed after a government takes office, it is difficult for public institutions to gain momentum in carrying out the government's agenda without resolving the structural problem of appointees from previous administrations serving out the remainder of their terms," and emphasized, "Discussions in the National Assembly on aligning the terms of the president and public institution heads must be held urgently."
