【Financial News, Jeju = Yong-bok Jeong】 Sales under this year’s Jeju agricultural produce consumer coupon program totaled 8.78 billion won from January to September, exceeding last year’s full-year sales of 7.915 billion won. Sales over the nine months amounted to 2,274 tonnes, and the value of discount coupons provided to consumers was tallied at 350 million won.
According to Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on the 22nd, sales of Jeju-grown agricultural products through the consumer coupon program by the end of September this year were 865 million won (10.9%) higher than sales over the 12 months of last year.
The Jeju agricultural produce consumer coupon program provides discounts to ease consumers’ purchasing burden and expand farmers’ sales channels. The Jeju Nonghyup Cooperative Joint Business Corporation, Jeju Nonghyup Vegetable Cooperative Joint Business Corporation, and Jeju Citrus Agricultural Cooperative participate in the program, issuing discount coupons worth up to 20% of the purchase price when selling citrus fruits, winter vegetables and other products. Online sales are not eligible for support.
Discount support through September this year totaled 350 million won. Late-season citrus received the largest amount, at 248 million won, followed by vegetables at 62 million won and open-field mandarins at 40 million won.
Since the beginning of the year, Jeju Province has provided consumer coupons for events promoting late-season citrus consumption, events linked to thank-you gifts for Hometown Love Donations, and promotional events for Jeju-grown cabbage, among others.
At year-end, discount events will continue in line with the shipping schedules for mandarins and winter vegetables. The province plans promotional sales events at large, medium-sized and small supermarkets, focusing on open-field mandarins from mid-October through December, and on winter vegetables such as winter radishes and carrots in November and December.
Kim Young-jun, head of Jeju Province’s Bureau of Agriculture, Livestock and Food, said, “We will actively support sales of Jeju agricultural products by ensuring that consumption promotion events proceed smoothly through the end of the year, while shipments of open-field mandarins and winter vegetables continue.”
