According to Hope Friend Hunger Countermeasures on the 22nd, the project was carried out jointly with the Community Chest of Korea. From November last year through this month, about 350 million won was spent to provide food voucher cards to around 400 households in Lebanon.
The recipients were displaced people in Beirut and the northern regions, Syrian refugees, and residents from vulnerable groups. In cooperation with the local NGO LSESD-MERATH, participating households were divided into two groups, with each group receiving support for six months. The amount of support varied according to household size.
Korea Food for the Hungry International assessed the project's impact using the reduced Coping Strategies Index (r-CSI), which tracks responses to food shortages. Used by the World Food Programme (WFP) and others, the index reflects the frequency and severity of five behaviors over the previous seven days, including reducing the amount or number of meals and borrowing food.
A comparison before and after support, based on a random selection of around 100 households from the first group to receive assistance, showed that the share of households borrowing food from people around them fell from 61% to 48%. The share reducing the number of meals per day declined from 76% to 62%, while the share reducing the amount eaten at each meal fell from 92% to 83%.
After the support ends, Korea Food for the Hungry International plans to conduct an additional survey to assess changes in how households respond to food shortages and discuss future support plans.
Korea Food for the Hungry International Chair Choi Chang-nam said, "As the difficulties faced by Lebanese residents continue amid protracted conflict and the economic crisis, attention and support from the international community are urgently needed," adding that the organization would continue providing humanitarian assistance to help its neighbors return to stable daily lives.
