[Financial News] A system that analyzes footage from wildfire-monitoring cameras using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect smoke has been set up in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
According to Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association on the 22nd, an AI-based wildfire detection system has been linked to 10 CCTV cameras monitoring key areas of Yongin, with sponsorship from SK hynix. When smoke suspected to be from a wildfire is detected, the system immediately alerts monitoring staff, helping fire crews respond.
The system covers CCTV cameras installed at Seokseongsan, Dolbongsan, Dokjobong, Sigungsan, Jeonggwangsan, Gubongsan, Geumbaksan and Gwanggyosan, among other locations. It analyzes footage in real time, 24 hours a day, using AI and deep-learning technology.
Previously, monitoring staff had to watch feeds from multiple CCTV cameras themselves to look for smoke. The system aims to reduce surveillance blind spots through video analysis and give responders time to act in the early stages of a wildfire.
Yongin is an area where forests and urban areas are adjacent, making early firefighting crucial. Wildfires can also spread through spot fires, when embers carried by strong winds ignite fires elsewhere.
Shin Hoon, secretary-general of Hope Bridge, said, “Through close cooperation with businesses, we will continue to expand disaster-prevention infrastructure that makes use of advanced technology.”
