According to legal circles on the 22nd, the Seoul Northern District Court’s 14th Criminal Division, presided over by Judge Oh Byung-hee, held the first hearing that morning for Mr. Jeon, 60, who was indicted on a murder charge while in custody.
Mr. Jeon’s lawyer denied the charges that day, saying he had no intention of killing. The lawyer also requested another hearing or that the sentencing date be set far enough in the future, saying more time was needed to reach a settlement with the bereaved family and work toward making amends for the harm caused.
According to prosecutors, Mr. Jeon is accused of killing an acquaintance, a man in his 60s, after wielding a weapon during a physical altercation at a go parlor in Gongneung-dong, Nowon-gu, Seoul, at around 10:45 p.m. on August 8.
Mr. Jeon had been drinking at the time. The victim, who had been stabbed, was taken to the hospital but ultimately died.
Mr. Jeon was reportedly playing an illegal card game with the victim at the time of the crime when they argued over the rules and other aspects of the game.
The court granted the request from Mr. Jeon’s side and decided to hold one more hearing to conduct a sentencing investigation and allow time for a settlement. It plans to close arguments at the next hearing unless there are special circumstances.
The next hearing will be held at the Seoul Northern District Court on the morning of November 19.
