[Financial News] CJ Logistics Construction Division has won a contract worth 315 billion won to build the kt cloud Ansan AI Data Center. The hyperscale facility will have a power intake capacity of 50MW and is targeted for completion in 2029.
According to CJ Logistics Construction Division on the 22nd, the project involves building an AI data center in the Banwol National Industrial Complex in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. The client, kt cloud Co., Ltd., plans to use the facility directly after its completion.
The new data center will have two basement levels and nine above-ground floors, with a gross floor area of approximately 36,879 square meters. Its power intake capacity will be 50MW, while its IT load—the power supplied to information technology (IT) equipment such as servers—will be 32MW.
kt cloud is expanding related projects in the Seoul metropolitan area and beyond, with a target of supplying AI data centers (AIDCs) with a combined capacity of 1GW by 2031. CJ Logistics Construction Division will handle civil engineering, building, landscaping and mechanical systems work, and carry out commissioning (test operation) through Level 3, which checks the initial startup and normal operation of individual pieces of equipment.
The planned site is located within the Banwol Special National Industrial Complex in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. It has good access to the Pyeongtaek-Siheung Expressway and the Yeongdong Expressway via Namansan IC. Large data center projects, including KAM Square Ansan and Timbuktu Ansan, are also underway nearby.
CJ Logistics Construction Division has built up a track record in data center construction for outside clients, starting with a data center project for the Gabia consortium in 2022. In 2024, it completed the kt cloud Gyeongbuk AI Data Center.
Recently, the company has also taken part in projects to convert existing industrial facilities into data centers. Last August, it won a remodeling contract to convert a cold-chain logistics center in Pungsan-dong, Hanam, Gyeonggi Province, into an edge data center. This month, it also won the contract to convert a semiconductor substrate circuit factory in Ansan into the “Ansan Our Data Center” and is carrying out the construction.
With this contract, CJ Logistics Construction Division has expanded its data center construction track record and broadened its capabilities to build data centers of various sizes—from edge to hyperscale—through both new construction and conversion projects.
Digital technologies, including drone stations, AI-based construction progress management tools and 4D BIM, will be used at the kt cloud Ansan AI Data Center site to strengthen management of construction progress, quality and safety.
A drone station is a system that automatically carries out drone photography, charging and data transmission according to a preset schedule. The footage is used to monitor construction progress and identify potential hazards. The plan is to reduce repetitive on-site record-keeping and improve information sharing between headquarters and the site.
The project will also use the company-developed AI-based construction progress management tool “Construction Progress Navigator.” It is designed to manage work priorities and progress by stage, and reduce the risk of missed tasks or construction delays. The company also plans to systematically allocate time for follow-up commissioning and performance verification.
The project currently uses 4D BIM, which links time and construction schedule information with three-dimensional building information modeling (BIM). This approach combines time and schedule data with a building’s 3D design model to check the construction sequence and identify potential conflicts between work activities in advance.
CJ Logistics Construction Division CEO Min Young-hak said, “Building on the expertise and know-how we have gained by constructing more than 30 office facilities in Seoul’s key business districts, including CBD and Gangnam Business District (GBD), we are expanding into data centers, a core infrastructure of the AI era.” He added, “We will strengthen our construction capabilities so we can handle both new builds and conversions for data centers of various sizes, from urban edge facilities to hyperscale centers.”
