[Financial News] Opposition criticism poured in after President Lee Jae Myung cited an answer from the generative AI chatbot Gemini to rebut the controversy over the heads of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency and the Public Prosecution Office attending Cabinet meetings.
Lee Jun-seok, a lawmaker from the Reform Party, wrote on Facebook on the 21st, “The president has started citing Gemini as a basis for governing,” adding, “This is the same person who, just a few months ago, chided Gemini for sometimes giving nonsensical answers.” He went on to mock him: “If the president is going to govern by asking Gemini, why not just replace the president with Gemini? It has no legal troubles, no criminal record, doesn’t swear, and has no mortgage registered against it—it’s better in every respect.”
Na Kyung-won, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, also criticized the president on Facebook, saying, “The president’s dismal level is on full display: he asks Gemini biased questions, gets biased answers, and posts them on X.” She asked, “Is this how he has been running the country?” She added, “The president is making decisions about state affairs by asking Gemini instead of consulting the Constitution and the law. It’s mind-boggling.”
Na also shared the answer she had received from Gemini. It said that justifying the two agency heads’ attendance at Cabinet meetings on the basis of President Lee’s general administrative supervisory authority could undermine the quasi-judicial nature and political neutrality of investigative and prosecutorial agencies. Citing this, Na called for an end to the two agency heads’ attendance at Cabinet meetings.
Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon joined the criticism, emphasizing the independence of investigative and prosecutorial agencies. He wrote on Facebook, “Even if you brought in Gemini’s granddaddy, the president must not direct investigations or prosecutions,” and claimed, “From the outset, this person called the president is turning the Serious Crime Investigation Agency into a ‘Lackey Investigation Agency’ and the Public Prosecution Office into a ‘Political Machinations Office.’” He added, “Why do you think the Republic of Korea has not had investigative and prosecutorial agencies attend Cabinet meetings all this time?” and said, “Stop making absurd arguments and come to your senses.”
That day, President Lee posted on X under the title “I Asked Gemini” and shared an AI response arguing that calls to bar the two agency heads from attending Cabinet meetings amounted to denying the president’s administrative supervisory authority. In a separate post, he stressed that the Serious Crime Investigation Agency and the Public Prosecution Office are also agencies under the direction of the president, prime minister, and ministers, while stating that he would not direct investigations into specific cases.
