Despite the large-scale operation to guide it out to open water, the shark “Bukangi,” which returned to the channel overnight, is swimming in a narrow stretch of water on the morning of the 22nd. [Financial News] The black shark “Bukangi,” which had been staying in a channel at Busan North Port Waterfront Park, was guided out on the third attempt after 34 days. But it has been confirmed that it came back instead of returning to the sea.
According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) on the 22nd, Bukangi passed through the first barrier net installed beneath a pontoon—a floating structure used for work on the water—at around 11:10 p.m. the previous day and is now swimming in front of the second net. The ministry plans to open one side of the net so Bukangi can move in and out, and discuss measures going forward.
Earlier, relevant agencies, including MOF and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, had installed the first barrier net at a point about 60 meters from the channel exit the previous day. However, Bukangi spent quite some time moving between the first barrier net and the area near Pier 1 without heading out to open water, before passing through the net; it is now swimming in front of the second net.
The relevant agencies believe Bukangi passed through the first barrier net via the net beneath the pontoon. They plan to deploy an underwater drone today to determine the exact cause, then discuss measures. First, to reduce the stress Bukangi experiences in the confined space, they plan to open one side of the second barrier net today so it can move in and out.
Meanwhile, during the second operation to guide it out to sea, carried out on the 2nd, Bukangi had also gone back and forth in front of the barrier net before returning to the channel.
