[Financial News] OpenAI officially announced that the number of advertisers on ChatGPT had surpassed 100,000. Building on this, OpenAI plans to step up its expansion of the advertising business, including extending it to 89 countries worldwide.
The strategy is seen as an effort to cover the costs of operating AI by monetizing users of free AI services through advertising.
Attention is focused on whether advertising revenue can establish itself as a new source of income for AI companies alongside AI subscription fees.
On the 21st (local time), OpenAI said it had expanded the advertising business, which had been placing ads on free ChatGPT in 63 countries, bringing the total number of countries where ads are run to 89.
After piloting ads on its free ChatGPT service in the United States in February, OpenAI expanded the countries targeted for advertising to five, including South Korea, in August. It is now extending the areas where it offers ads to a total of 89 countries.

OpenAI is believed to be rapidly expanding its ad business because demand for advertising on ChatGPT is growing.
OpenAI officially announced that the number of advertisers on ChatGPT had surpassed 100,000. In August, it said annualized revenue from the ChatGPT ad business had reached $1 billion (about 1.037 trillion won).
This demonstrates that the ad business is growing to the point where it can report revenue results officially less than six months after it began in the United States in February.
Annualized revenue is a figure calculated on the assumption that the rate of revenue generated at a particular point in time will continue for a year.
Foreign media outlets, including Axios, have even forecast that OpenAI’s ad revenue could reach $2.5 billion (about 3.3175 trillion won) this year.
Given that the market forecast for OpenAI’s revenue this year is $30 billion (about 40 trillion won), roughly 8% of its total revenue would come from showing ads to free users.
The industry’s analysis is that, as demand for advertising on ChatGPT grows and free ChatGPT users become accustomed to ads, OpenAI is expanding its revenue model—centered on AI subscriptions—to include advertising as well.
Meanwhile, as the AI services market moves in earnest beyond the competition to attract users and into the competition to monetize, the internet industry is watching closely to see whether AI service advertising will accelerate the reorganization of the online advertising market, previously centered on the internet, around AI services.
