[Financial News] LG Innotek is joining forces with NVIDIA to accelerate its push into the physical artificial intelligence (AI) market, including humanoid robots and autonomous driving. Its strategy is to integrate NVIDIA’s latest data transmission technology into its camera and sensing solutions and expand supply opportunities with global physical AI companies.
LG Innotek said on the 22nd that it had unveiled a sensing solution using NVIDIA’s latest Holoscan Sensor Bridge (HSB) technology at NVIDIA’s developer conference, “GTC Berlin,” held in Berlin, Germany, on the 20th (local time).
The HSB introduced this time is NVIDIA’s proprietary technology for transmitting data collected by sensors. It allows information gathered by sensors to be sent directly to an AI computer without going through a central processing unit (CPU)—effectively opening up a data superhighway. This enables physical AI systems, such as self-driving cars and robots, to process information and make decisions faster. The industry sees HSB as a key technology that will lead the physical AI ecosystem in the future.
Through this collaboration, LG Innotek plans to expand its business ties with global companies that use NVIDIA’s AI platform. In particular, it aims to tap the market for key components for physical AI by leveraging its optical design expertise built up in mobile and autonomous driving, as well as its integrated sensing technology spanning cameras, LiDAR and radar.
The two companies plan to expand their collaboration on HSB-based physical AI sensing solutions, including vision sensing for humanoid robots and robotic hands. They also plan to jointly develop new sensing solutions that work with NVIDIA’s next-generation platforms and unveil them at next year’s CES and GTC, among other events.
LG Innotek has recently been expanding its future businesses, focusing on autonomous driving and robotics. After signing a strategic partnership last year with U.S. LiDAR specialist Aeva, it is pursuing the joint development of autonomous driving solutions this year with U.S. autonomous-driving software company Applied Intuition and Kakao Mobility Corp., among others.
In robotics, LG Innotek is developing components for robots with Boston Dynamics and has also begun mass-producing camera modules for North American robotics customers. The company aims to build a new foundation for growth by extending the technological capabilities it developed in its mobile-focused camera module business into robotics, autonomous driving and other fields.
Moon Hyuk-soo, president of LG Innotek, said, “This collaboration is a great opportunity to bring LG Innotek’s differentiated integrated sensing solutions to the global market.” He added, “As a ‘total solutions provider for physical AI,’ encompassing not only sensing but also communication modules and semiconductor substrates, we will move quickly to establish an early lead in the physical AI solutions market.”
