[Financial News] Another tragic loss has struck the Kennedy family, one of America’s most prominent political dynasties. Kyle Francis Kennedy, the granddaughter of former U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy (RFK), who was assassinated, has died at the age of 42.
According to international media outlets including the Guardian and The Boston Globe on the 21st (local time), Kyle Kennedy died on the 21st of last month at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts. The exact cause of death has not been disclosed, but she reportedly had been battling prolonged paralysis and various health problems after suffering a severe spinal cord injury in 2020.
Born in 1984 to Michael Kennedy, RFK’s sixth son, and Victoria Gifford, Kennedy devoted her life to helping vulnerable members of society. After graduating with a degree in history from Georgetown University, she earned master’s degrees from Pace University and Harvard Graduate School of Education. She joined the nonprofit education organization Teach For America and worked as a teacher in New York City public schools, among other efforts to advance education reform for children from underserved communities.
Kennedy had a particular passion for sports and even completed the Boston Marathon in 2019, but an accidental spinal cord injury the following year marked a major turning point in her life. She did not give in to despair, instead becoming a disability rights advocate and speaking out against inequality, including by calling attention to discrimination in health care for people with disabilities at hearings before the Massachusetts state legislature. In an obituary, her family paid tribute to her, saying, “Even during her difficult battle with illness, she never lost her characteristic sense of humor and determination, and she did everything she could to be the best mom to her two sons (12-year-old Conor and 10-year-old Declan).”
Her death has once again drawn attention to the so-called “Kennedy family curse,” marked by a succession of accidents and assassinations. Her grandfather, RFK, was assassinated at the age of 42 during the 1968 Democratic presidential primary, while her great-uncle, former President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK), was also shot dead in Dallas in 1963. Her father, Michael Kennedy, died at 39 in a skiing accident in Colorado in 1997.
The family’s tragedies have continued unabated: John F. Kennedy Jr. died in a light-aircraft crash in 1999 at 38; RFK’s granddaughter Saoirse Kennedy Hill died of a drug overdose in 2019 at 22; and Maeve Kennedy McKean drowned in a canoe accident in 2020. Last December, JFK’s granddaughter through his daughter, Tatiana Schlossberg, also died of leukemia at the young age of 35.
