Attention / Kim Dae-su / Originals
[Financial News] The new book Attention by Kim Dae-su, a professor at KAIST, explores how concentration works differently for each person. It revisits the conventional wisdom that concentration is measured by the ability to sit for a long time and immerse oneself in a single task, and guides readers toward finding a way to focus that suits them.
Drawing on research in neuroscience and cognitive psychology, the book explains automatic attention, in which attention is drawn spontaneously, and volitional concentration, in which one consciously directs one’s attention. It examines differences in what people focus on and what motivates them, including people who focus while moving among several interests and those who thrive when delving deeply into a single subject.
Based on the author’s concentration test, “ATI,” the book presents 16 types. It outlines the strengths and weaknesses of each type, ways to arrange spaces and collaborate, and strategies for understanding smartphone algorithms and adjusting how one uses them. It encourages readers to ask themselves why they are focusing.
