[Financial News] A man who made and circulated fake wedding invitations falsely claiming he would marry Prime Minister Han Seong-sook, and even went to the actual prime minister’s official residence, was caught by police.
The Seoul Jongno Police Station said on the 21st that it had booked a man identified as A on suspicion of defamation for producing and circulating a fake wedding invitation claiming he would marry Prime Minister Han, and was investigating the case.
According to police, A went to the prime minister’s official residence in Samcheong-dong, Jongno District, Seoul, on the 11th—the date he had listed on the fake invitation as the date of the ceremony—and was caught at the scene. He reportedly said, in effect, “I’ve come to marry Prime Minister Han,” in front of the residence’s security office. A was unable to enter the residence, and police took him in for questioning on a voluntary basis at the scene. After an initial interview, they allowed him to go home for the time being.
The invitation A made contained standard wording asking guests to offer their congratulations: “We, who have each walked different paths, now wish to walk one path together as husband and wife.” A’s own name appeared in the groom section, and Prime Minister Han’s name in the bride section. In particular, the invitation specified the venue as “the prime minister’s official residence, Samcheong-dong, Jongno District, Seoul” for October 11 and even included a map showing how to get there. Police believe he carefully fabricated and circulated the false document.
Police plan to closely investigate A, including whether he has a history of mental illness, as well as his specific motives and the circumstances behind making and circulating the fake invitation.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Office said of the incident, “This is an absurd case of dissemination, and we are deeply concerned about the spread of false information that is completely contrary to the facts.”
