[Financial News] Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Lee Un-ju called for a comprehensive review of the party’s existing North Korea policy, saying, “We need to consider a North Korea policy that people in their 20s and 30s can accept.”
According to political sources on the 21st, Lee made the same argument in a post on her social media account the previous day: “Policies such as inter-Korean reconciliation and national reunification were products of an era of globalization when liberalism flourished. It is difficult to approach inter-Korean relations from the same romantic nationalist perspective as in the past, and difficult to win the younger generation’s support.”
The remarks are thought to have been prompted by Kim Yo-jong, director of the General Affairs Department of the Workers’ Party of Korea, saying in a statement on the 19th that North Korea would consider increasing the deployment of tactical strike assets and resuming loudspeaker broadcasts toward South Korea. In response, Lee said, “Did North Korea even offer so much as an apology over the (DMZ) landmine incident? There are limits to how shamelessly you can turn the blame around,” and insisted, “There should be no aid to North Korea—not even humanitarian aid—before (North Korea) apologizes.”
Lee went on to say, “Leaving reunification aside, we cannot give up even the aspiration to try to get through these difficult times through peaceful coexistence or economic cooperation between North and South Korea.” She added, “But let’s face the harsh reality before us. Only then can we properly protect our beloved sons and daughters, our people and our national interests, preserve peace, and still make a show of our humanitarianism.”
