People Power Party floor leader Chung Jeom-sik strongly criticized the Democratic Party of Korea leadership’s actions and the controversy over National Museum of Korea Director Yoo Hong-jun exhibiting items from his personal collection, and called for Yoo’s immediate resignation.
At a meeting to prepare for the parliamentary audit on the 20th, Chung said, “The government and the ruling party are repeatedly engaging in tyranny and misrule in every field, including real estate, stocks, defense, and public safety,” and pointed out, “The ruling party leader’s abuse of power has added to this, fueling public anger.”
Chung continued, “Party leader Kim Min-seok promised a 10% increase in approval ratings within 100 days of taking office, but now, 60 days into his term, they have instead fallen by 7–8%,” and warned, “If politics continues as it is now, the approval rating won’t rise; it will slump into the 10% range.”
Chung also took direct aim at National Museum of Korea Director Yoo Hong-jun’s qualifications.
Chung cited Yoo’s exhibiting at the National Museum of Korea items from his personal collection that he had bought at online auctions, as well as the museum’s mistakenly displaying a pro-Japanese collaborator’s calligraphy as the work of a patriot, and stressed, “Yoo apologized, calling it a mistake, but we must thoroughly examine whether it was intentional.”
He also brought up issues from Yoo’s tenure as head of the Cultural Heritage Administration, including food preparation at King Hyojong’s tomb and the controversy over the inscription during restoration of the bronze bell at Naksansa Temple. Chung then called on Yoo to resign voluntarily, saying, “This is the predictable disaster of a reward appointment for a presidential campaign insider, bringing back an unqualified person after 20 years.”
