SK Telecom announced on the 21st that it will launch activities with the FSS to prevent voice-phishing losses ahead of Financial Day. The goal is to combine SK Telecom’s artificial intelligence (AI) and telecommunications technologies with the FSS’s expertise to raise awareness of the latest scam tactics and encourage people to take practical steps to prevent them.
Since the 20th, SK Telecom has been operating an interactive booth for spectators at SK Knights home games held at Jamsil Student Gymnasium.
Using recent cases provided by the FSS, spectators can take part in virtual simulations of voice-phishing scams and learn how to respond in suspicious situations.
Prevention videos and true-or-false quizzes will also be shown before the game, during quarter breaks and at halftime. The program is designed to help spectators encounter and remember ways to prevent financial fraud during the game.
On the 26th, FSS experts will provide training at SKT Tower for staff members responsible for the “Visiting Service.” The FSS plans to share examples of scams involving impersonation of investigative agencies and financial companies, as well as cases in which AI is used to alter the voices of family members and acquaintances, along with advice on how to respond. The two sides also plan to hold security training in Hapcheon County, South Gyeongsang Province, in November through the “Visiting Service,” covering financial fraud prevention and the safe use of telecommunications.
SK Telecom plans to add verified phone numbers provided by the FSS to its voice and text spam-filtering system to reduce cases in which legitimate calls from financial institutions are blocked by mistake, and to upgrade its voice-phishing and scam detection features. Last year, AI filtering proactively blocked about 1.1 billion instances of voice spam, voice-phishing calls and spam text messages.
An FSS official said, “To prevent losses from voice phishing, it is important to make information about the relevant tactics and how to respond easy for the public to access and use in everyday life,” adding, “We will continue to explore ways to provide prevention information effectively in cooperation with SK Telecom.”
Lee Hye-yeon, head of SK Telecom’s Customer Value Innovation Office, said, “We are expanding our in-person outreach so customers can learn about and put voice-phishing prevention measures into practice in their daily lives,” adding, “Together with the FSS, we will continue to expand activities that help keep customers safe in their everyday lives, including education, hands-on experiences and technology upgrades.”
