According to LOTTE Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. on the 21st, Le West’s exterior was designed around the concept of ‘Urban Layer & Connectivity.’ The design focused on highlighting the distinct character of each space while giving the complex as a whole a unified feel.
Le West consists of four blocks in the Magok district. CP1 houses COEX Magok Convention Center and Mercure Seoul Magok; CP2 houses the LOTTE Castle Le West officetel complex; CP3-1 houses the senior residence VL Le West; and CP3-2 contains office and commercial facilities.
The exterior highlights the different uses by contrasting horizontal layers in non-residential facilities with vertical frames in residential facilities. A combination of beige, gray and blue tones strengthens the connections between the blocks and reduces the monotony of the large-scale complex.
CP1 features a cantilever structure with one end projecting into the air, along with a large media façade. Transparent glass curtain walls and horizontal layers also add a sense of openness. CP2 features repeated vertical frames using brick-tile panels, while CP3-1 incorporates vertical stone panels and a curtain-wall-style façade.
The Good Design Award, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and organized by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion, is being held for the 42nd time this year. It evaluates design, appearance, functionality and economic viability, among other criteria, and awards the GD mark to outstanding products. Awards are then presented to works that receive high ratings.
Three other spatial designs by LOTTE Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. were also selected as outstanding designs. ‘Jajak-ui Hosu’ at LOTTE Castle Signature in Wonju is a garden that uses the landscaping brand Green by Groove to evoke the beauty of a primeval birch forest. ‘Janbyeol’ at Cheongdam Le El is an artwork inspired by stars pouring down; a tea house and waterfront facilities were built alongside it so visitors can view its reflection in the water. The VL Le West community is designed to support health care, cultural and leisure activities, and interaction among residents.
A LOTTE Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. representative said, “This award means that Le West, a complex representing the Magok district, has been recognized not only for its functionality and interior design but also for an exterior design that adds value to the urban landscape.”
