[Financial News] Hyundai Motor Company has completely revamped and launched the Tucson, its flagship sport utility vehicle (SUV), for the first time in six years, as it nears 11 million in cumulative global sales. Despite setting the starting price at 31.4 million won, the company has boosted the model’s appeal by making advanced safety and convenience features standard. As competition in electrification heats up, Hyundai is stepping up its efforts to target the global SUV market by improving hybrid efficiency and interior space.
On the 21st, Hyundai Motor Company announced the key specifications and prices of the fifth-generation, fully redesigned All-New Hyundai Tucson and began taking orders. The Tucson is one of Hyundai Motor Company’s signature models, with cumulative global sales expected to surpass 11 million by the end of this year.
The new Tucson is offered with two powertrains: a 1.6-liter turbo gasoline engine and a 1.6-liter turbo hybrid. The gasoline model produces a maximum output of 193 horsepower, 13 hp more than before. Replacing the previous seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with an eight-speed automatic has improved shifting feel. The hybrid’s next-generation system raises its combined maximum output to 245 hp, an increase of 10 hp over the previous model. Its combined fuel economy is 17.4 km/L, an improvement of 1.2 km/L over the previous model, based on 17-inch wheels and two-wheel drive.
The body has also grown. Length, width, and wheelbase have increased by 60 mm, 40 mm, and 30 mm, respectively, compared with the previous model. Trunk capacity has been expanded to 645 liters, and the second-row door opening angle has widened from 73 degrees to 83 degrees. The share of ultra-high-strength steel in the body has also risen to 58%, enhancing rigidity. The exterior incorporates the “Art of Steel” design, and an XRT trim tailored for outdoor use is also available.
Pricing and standard equipment have also been a focus. Among the four trims, the starting prices are 31.4 million won for the gasoline H-Pick and 36.15 million won for the hybrid H-Pick. The gasoline Exclusive is priced at 35.3 million won, the Inspiration at 37.9 million won, and the XRT at 36.8 million won. The corresponding hybrid versions are priced at 39.9 million won, 42.7 million won, and 41.65 million won, respectively. Hybrid prices reflect applicable tax benefits.
Even the least expensive H-Pick comes standard with the Pleos Connect in-vehicle infotainment system, an app marketplace, and nine airbags, including a front-row center-side airbag. Also included as standard are Hyundai Motor Company’s first “redundant power supply for door unlocking,” pedal misapplication safety assist, highway driving assist, a surround-view monitor, and front and rear parking collision-avoidance assist. Hyundai Motor Company’s strategy is to make the new Tucson more competitive for buyers by moving premium convenience features from the options list into the standard equipment.
A Hyundai Motor Company representative said, “The All-New Hyundai Tucson is an SUV that combines a strong design with evolved technology and practicality to give customers confidence in their diverse everyday lives,” adding, “We will communicate the value of the refreshed Tucson through advertising campaigns and a variety of experiential content.”
