[Financial News] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said after meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy that U.S. intelligence sharing on Russian missile attacks was functioning normally again.
BBC reported on the 20th (local time) that the meeting between President Zelensky and special envoy Steve Witkoff in Oslo, Norway, took place amid escalating tensions between the two countries. Ukraine had claimed that the U.S. recently stopped providing key intelligence, prompting U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to push back, calling it “an absurd claim.”
Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who attended talks on Ukraine, said there had been “substantial progress” on proposals to achieve peace. He did not disclose details, but urged patience in the negotiations ahead. President Zelensky and his European allies agreed that it was now Russia’s turn to respond to the peace proposal reached in Oslo, through special envoy Witkoff, who is visiting St. Petersburg, Russia, on the 21st.
President Trump’s son-in-law and senior envoy Jared Kushner also participated in the meeting by video conference. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stressed that “Europe must also be at the negotiating table” in future talks to end the war.
Russia has yet to issue an official position, but Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he would hear out special envoy Witkoff’s proposal while making clear that “there will be no political concessions of any kind.”
Relations between Ukraine and the United States have remained strained, with President Trump saying that “Ukraine needs a new president” and that “another person should represent Ukraine in negotiations.” Immediately after the Oslo press conference, Trump spoke with reporters at the White House, saying, “It is time for Ukraine to make a decision to end the war,” and urging a swift agreement.
After the Oslo meeting, President Zelensky said, “I am grateful that U.S. intelligence sharing is working again, including the early-warning system for ballistic missiles, on which the lives of civilians and children depend.” He added that he hoped for a positive solution to the issue of speed limits on SpaceX’s Starlink satellite service, which has recently been used in drone attacks.
He reiterated, “We are not losing the war, but we are losing our precious people in the ongoing attacks,” adding, “We are ready to engage in negotiations to end the war.” The talks reportedly also covered a ceasefire in the energy sector and strong security guarantees.
