[Financial News] AI startup Anthropic posted net losses of more than $80 billion (about 108 trillion won) in the first half of this year, including $72 billion in accounting expenses.
On the 20th (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported this, citing a draft of Anthropic’s preliminary IPO review application. The figure marks a sharp widening in losses compared with the $13 billion net loss in the same period a year earlier.
According to the WSJ, most of the first-half net loss—$72 billion—stemmed from accounting charges, including valuation losses caused by fluctuations in the value of convertible bonds (CBs) and other financial instruments issued during fundraising.
The results were announced as investors have been closely scrutinizing AI companies’ massive spending and financial health, including purchases of chips to develop and operate high-performance AI models, data center construction and efforts to secure computing capacity.
By contrast, revenue continued to grow, with Anthropic’s third-quarter revenue reportedly rising 45% from the previous quarter to $16.8 billion.
Some international media outlets reported last September that Anthropic had recorded a net loss of $42 billion in 2025 and planned to invest a total of $518 billion over the next several years in cloud services, computing and infrastructure development.
Last year, Anthropic’s revenue surged twelvefold year on year to about $4.6 billion. However, its operating loss alone, excluding debt amortization and other items related to earlier fundraising, was reportedly more than $8 billion.
