[Financial News] The Korean National Police Agency is joining forces with a Singaporean science and technology agency to strengthen its capacity for future policing using advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.
The Korean National Police Agency said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Singapore’s Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) on science and technology capacity development and cooperation at Songdo Convensia in Incheon on the 21st.
Officials from both agencies, including Kim Jong-cheol, acting chief of the Korean National Police Agency, and Chan Shan, head of HTX, attended the signing ceremony that day.
The agreement was designed to enable the agencies in the two countries to share their experience and expertise in policing using advanced science and technology, and to expand technological cooperation, including joint research.
The two agencies agreed to pursue joint science and technology research and development (R&D), build a cooperation network through information sharing, and promote training and knowledge exchange. They will identify joint research projects reflecting each agency’s areas of interest and the needs of frontline policing, and consider ways to expand cooperation through technology exchanges and field testing.
HTX is a specialized science and technology agency under Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs. Drawing on its expertise in science and engineering, it provides practical technological solutions to agencies under the ministry, including the Singapore Police Force, the Singapore Civil Defence Force and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority.
The Korean National Police Agency is also integrating advanced technologies such as AI and robotics into policing and strengthening its technological capabilities to respond to a changing policing environment. In the wake of the agreement, it plans to continue defining areas of cooperation with Singapore and expand international joint research and technology exchanges.
Acting chief Kim said, "To respond effectively to a rapidly changing policing environment, it is important to combine frontline experience with advanced science and technology." He added, "I hope cooperation between the two agencies will lay the groundwork for advancing future policing through the use of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, and ultimately lead to results that improve public safety."
HTX chief Chan Shan also emphasized the importance of cross-border cooperation and technological innovation, saying that the two agencies would combine their expertise to address problems arising in real-world policing.
