[Financial News] The Korean Red Cross will provide additional aid worth about 710 million won, including essential supplies and a month of meals, for flood victims in Nepal who have been living in tents for nearly two months since the flooding.
On the 20th, the Korean Red Cross said it plans to deliver essential supplies worth about 490 million won (300,000 Swiss francs) through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The supplies include hygiene kits, kitchenware sets and disposable diapers.
In partnership with the Nepal Red Cross Society, it will also spend about 220 million won to provide meals for a month to around 500 displaced people at four temporary accommodation facilities in the Nuwakot area.
The aid reflects the findings of three rounds of field assessments by the emergency relief response team. At the Nuwakot Kotobari Displacement Center, where residents of the severely affected Rasuwa area have taken refuge, many displaced people have been unable to find shelter and are living in tents, relying on communal meals.
Flooding that struck northern Nepal on August 26 destroyed roads and bridges as well as homes, isolating some areas. The IFRC said that poor access to affected areas and damage to infrastructure had made it difficult to assess the damage and deliver relief supplies.

Citing the IFRC, the Nepalese government and others, the Red Cross reported that the flooding left 1,457 people dead and more than 5,000 missing. Further flooding also struck the Gorkha area on the 11th, leaving five people missing.
Since the flooding, the Red Cross has distributed relief supplies that were prepared and stockpiled in advance with support from Samsung. It plans to provide additional items, including cold-weather supplies, school supplies for children and hygiene products for women, in consultation with the Nepal Red Cross Society.
Park Jong-sul, Secretary General of the Korean Red Cross, said, “For people displaced by a disaster, life after the disaster itself can become another disaster.” He added, “The Korean Red Cross will work with the IFRC and the Nepal Red Cross Society to help displaced people stabilize their lives and recover, so that this suffering does not continue.”
