According to the organizers on the 20th, the academic forum “Park Chung-hee the Revolutionary” will be held in the main conference hall on the second floor of the National Assembly Members' Office Building in Yeouido, Seoul. It is co-hosted by the incorporated Yeongnam-Honam Mutual Development Forum, the incorporated Park Chung-hee Spirit Research Institute, and Rep. Lim I-ja of the People Power Party, among others.
The forum was organized to mark the 109th birth anniversary of former President Park this year and the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Yushin on October 17, 1972.
The organizers said, "We seek to move beyond the conventional view of President Park Chung-hee merely as an administrator who led industrialization or a ruler who suppressed human rights, and to reassess him as a 'revolutionary' who transformed Koreans' consciousness and behavior and the way Korean society and the state are run."
At the forum, Lee Young-hoon, emeritus professor in the Department of Economics at Seoul National University; Lee Kang-ho, a former research fellow at the Korea National Strategy Forum; and Joo Ik-jong, a director at Syngman Rhee Academy, will each present a paper.
The paper topics are “Park Chung-hee's Anger, Calling, and Breakthrough”; “Establishing Park Chung-hee's Korea-U.S.-Japan Alliance and Cooperation System: Normalization of Korea-Japan Diplomatic Relations, Deployment of Troops to Vietnam, and the APATO Initiative”; and “Park Chung-hee's Second Revolution: Yushin.”
The Yushin Constitution was promulgated and came into force on December 27, 1972. Its main provisions included having the president indirectly elected by the National Conference for Unification and removing limits on the president serving multiple or consecutive terms.
A question-and-answer session with the audience will follow the paper presentations, with Han Min-ho, head of the National Movement to Expose the Reality of Confucius Institutes, serving as moderator.
