South Chungcheong Province held the South Chungcheong Semiconductor and Display Technology Exchange Meeting and Seminar at Mona Valley in Asan on the 20th. Around 150 people attended, including Kim Young-gwan, head of the province’s AI Industry Innovation Bureau, and representatives of local governments, universities, research institutions, and semiconductor and display companies in the province, demonstrating strong interest in the commercialization of advanced technologies.
The event featured a range of activities, including an academic discussion forum examining the latest industry and technology trends and a tailored technology exchange meeting connecting companies with promising technologies held by research institutions.
In the discussion forum, Ju Dae-won, managing patent attorney at Secheong IPN Patent and Law Office, delivered the first presentation, on “Strategies for Advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Semiconductor and Display Industries and Rapidly Commercializing Intellectual Property (IP).” Kim Seong-dong, a professor at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, followed with a presentation on “The Present and Future of Advanced Packaging and Hybrid Bonding,” examining global trends in packaging technology. Industry experts Park Young-jun, chief technology and marketing officer (CTMO) at LIPAC, and Oh Yun-seok, PR at Corning Precision Materials, introduced key technologies poised to lead future markets: “Component Positioning in the Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) Ecosystem” and “Glass Substrate Solutions for Advanced Packaging,” respectively. Their presentations drew a strong response from attendees.
The technology exchange meeting included one-on-one technology transfer consultations that closely matched promising patented technologies held by universities and research institutions with the technology needs of companies in the province. A free consulting desk staffed by patent attorneys was also available to promptly address intellectual property issues companies encounter when adopting technologies.
South Chungcheong Province expects the event to help build an ecosystem in which research and development (R&D) results move beyond theory and lead smoothly to companies’ development of new products and commercialization. The province will also step up financial support measures in partnership with the Korea Technology Finance Corporation (KOTEC), helping local companies that acquire technology secure initial commercialization funding. Small and medium-sized enterprises recommended by KOTEC will receive guarantee support of up to KRW 500 million, along with practical benefits such as reduced guarantee fees, completing a one-stop support system spanning everything from technology adoption to commercialization.
“Close cooperation among government, industry, academia and research institutions is essential to maintaining the semiconductor and display industries’ overwhelming competitive edge,” said Kim Young-gwan, head of South Chungcheong Province’s AI Industry Innovation Bureau. “We will expand the foundations for cooperation to help ensure the timely adoption of cutting-edge technologies and enable innovative ideas to bear fruit in the market.”
The South Chungcheong region, particularly Cheonan and Asan, is home to a global display hub and a concentration of semiconductor packaging, parts and equipment companies. It is considered to have ideal geographic and industrial conditions for taking the lead in the advanced packaging and co-packaged optics (CPO) ecosystems. Accordingly, South Chungcheong Province plans to accelerate the creation of an “advanced convergence cluster” that organically links the province’s display production infrastructure with the semiconductor back-end processing industry, building on the technology exchange meeting.
