[Financial News] Korea National Railway checked its disaster response system with relevant agencies after simulating a series of incidents at a construction site on the B line of the Seoul Metropolitan Area Great Train eXpress (GTX), including a crane overturning, a fire and a facility collapse.
Korea National Railway said it held the ‘2026 Safe Korea Disaster Response Exercise’ on the 20th at the No. 1 construction section site of the Yongsan–Sangbong section of GTX-B, with 20 agencies taking part, including Yongsan-gu Office and Yongsan Fire Station.
The exercise simulated a compound disaster in which a crane toppled by torrential rain and gusts struck an elevated pedestrian bridge, and debris from damaged construction materials led to a fire and the collapse of work facilities.
Participating agencies shared conditions at the site over the National Disaster Safety Communications Network (PS-LTE) and checked communication procedures between agencies. They used the Disaster Management Resource Integrated Management System (KRMS) to deploy heavy equipment, including excavators and dump trucks, and also reviewed procedures for rapidly mobilizing personnel and equipment.
Jeong Jin-hyeok, who headed the Accident Support Headquarters, monitored, directed and coordinated the entire process in real time from the initial response through the handling of the incident and recovery, from the Disaster Countermeasures Situation Room at the railway authority’s headquarters.
Chairman Jeong said, “To minimize damage when a compound disaster occurs, a swift and systematic response through realistic exercises is important,” adding, “Going forward, we will continue to strengthen our disaster response capabilities through close cooperation with relevant agencies and take the lead in protecting the lives and safety of workers and the public.”
