[Financial News] Five citizens who subdued Choi Chung-rak (59), who went on a knife rampage at a large commercial facility in Incheon, received arrest rewards from police.
According to the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency on the 20th, police paid rewards the previous day to five citizens who helped apprehend Choi.
Among the citizens who received rewards were Shin Jung-hyeon (23), who threw a chair to subdue Choi directly, and Na Hyeon-jun (31), who helped stop the attack and subdue him.
The other three reward recipients were also recognized for helping apprehend Choi, including by grabbing him and preventing him from moving.
Taking into account that a 19-year-old woman injured in the incident is receiving treatment while unconscious, police did not publicize the award ceremony.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korean National Police Agency are reportedly also considering giving them government awards, separate from the arrest rewards.
Choi is suspected of attempting to murder 10 visitors by stabbing them with a weapon inside a large commercial facility in Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, at around 1:48 p.m. on the 13th.
Investigators found that he had tied weapons to both hands with tape and other materials and swung them around. The swift intervention by citizens prevented more serious harm.
Eight of the 10 victims in the incident, including the 19-year-old woman who is unconscious, were classified as injured; the other two were found to be uninjured.
