[Financial News] LG Electronics has unveiled a next-generation traffic safety solution as it sets out to expand into global markets. The solution advances vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, a future mobility technology designed to prevent traffic accidents.
LG Electronics is taking part in the 2026 ITS World Congress, which has been taking place in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, for five days since the 19th, and will conduct an on-road driving demonstration of an integrated traffic safety solution combining V2X and vehicle-to-network (V2N) communication.
Participants who registered in advance can ride in a demonstration vehicle along an approximately 2.6-kilometer route and experience how it detects disabled or stopped vehicles, roadworks, severe weather, approaching ambulances and risks of collisions with pedestrians, then alerts the driver.
V2X is a technology that allows vehicles to exchange information directly with nearby entities, such as other vehicles and road infrastructure. Dedicated communications equipment in vehicles and infrastructure can exchange information directly and quickly without going through a separate communications network. A relay installed at a single location can effectively serve as a traffic control center for vehicles passing nearby.
V2N connects vehicles to networks and cloud servers using mobile communications networks. Mobile communications can provide a wealth of information over a wider area, including data on disabled vehicles, roadwork zones, weather and traffic signals.
LG Electronics has combined the two communications technologies, allowing V2X’s fast response and V2N’s broad service coverage to complement each other.
Within the communications range of roadside units (RSUs), which are installed along roads, at traffic lights and on utility poles to exchange information directly with vehicles, information gathered through both V2X and V2N is used. In areas where direct communication is difficult, V2N provides hazard information over mobile networks.
This allows vehicles to continuously identify nearby hazards even when communications conditions change. By combining information obtained through the two technologies, the system also provides drivers with more reliable information quickly.
In particular, the traffic safety solution unveiled this time meets the criteria for the top rating under Euro NCAP, the European New Car Assessment Programme. It helps automakers respond to increasingly stringent safety assessment standards and also supports their transition to software-defined vehicles (SDVs), which use software to enhance vehicle safety features.
LG Electronics continues to advance its vehicle communications capabilities, building on its technological prowess and its No. 1 global market share in telematics.
Recently, it became the first in the industry to apply a smart telematics solution based on R16, the latest 5G communications standard, to production models from European automakers. It has also unveiled a next-generation hybrid emergency call system that supports mobile networks from 2G through 5G, anticipating mandates requiring vehicles to be equipped with in-vehicle emergency call systems next year in Europe, China, the Middle East and elsewhere.
LG Electronics Vice President Lee Sang-yong, head of the VS Research Center, said, “We will continue to advance V2X technology, which seamlessly connects vehicles, road infrastructure and networks, and build an even safer future mobility ecosystem.”
