‘Final Interview’ tells the story of six applicants gathered in a final interview room who begin to suspect one another and fall into confusion after finding mysterious envelopes containing revelations about each of them.
The interview room turns into a locked room... The psychological battle in director Kim Jung-hoon’s ‘Final Interview’
The film is directed by Kim Jung-hoon, whose credits include Petty Romance, The Accidental Detective and The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure. ‘Final Interview’ builds on the premise that the applicants themselves choose the final successful candidate, adding mysterious envelopes of revelations. Surveillance cameras installed all around heighten the pressure in the interview room, while the truths revealed each time an envelope is opened shake up the characters’ relationships.
Director Kim explained through the production company, “If typical locked-room mysteries are films about finding the culprit, ‘Final Interview’ is a film about finding the truth hidden behind the facts.” By delving into the truth revealed through the disclosures and the stories of the people behind them, the film stages a psychological battle unlike those in conventional mysteries.
At the heart of the psychological battle is the ensemble performance of Jo Yi-hyun, Kim Jae-won, Shin Seung-ho, Kang Yoo-seok, Kwak Dong-yeon and Bae Kang-hee. “I tried not to miss the small moments when a gaze wavered or someone tried to hide their emotions,” director Kim said. “I wanted to show how the emotional ripples that began that way gathered and eventually became a huge wave that shook all six.” Here, the audience is the “seventh applicant” in the interview room.
