[Financial News] Singer Kim Gun-mo reportedly suffered extreme emotional distress after becoming embroiled in sexual assault allegations in 2019. What he went through before a decision clearing him of the allegations was finalized in November 2022 has been revealed in a documentary tracing cyber wreckers’ false allegations and the harm they caused.
The Wavve-exclusive documentary “Predators: Cyber Wreckers, A Record of War” (hereafter “Predators”) has ranked highly in the current affairs and documentary category since its release.
The documentary traces the activities of cyber wreckers who spread unverified allegations online to gain influence and make money. It also covers how people harmed by false allegations speak out about what happened to them and take steps to respond.
Episodes 1 and 2 of “Predators,” released on the 16th, opened with the hearing to determine whether an arrest warrant should be issued for Kim Se-eui, who runs the YouTube channel Garo Sero Research Institute (Gaseyeon). They then explored the experiences of people who said they had been harmed by allegations spread by cyber wreckers.
The documentary also covered the investigation involving Kim Gun-mo. When sexual misconduct allegations surfaced in late 2019, his 28-year career as a singer was dealt a major blow.
About three years later, in November 2022, the decision clearing him of the allegations was finalized, but he had suffered severe mental distress in the meantime.
According to the documentary, Kim Gun-mo’s public-interest tip was a key factor in prompting police to launch a full-scale investigation into allegations that cyber wreckers had spread false information.
At least 12 people—including entertainers, athletes and businesspeople—were reportedly identified as victims in connection with the case.
A journalist who reported on the Burning Sun scandal also described their experience as a victim. The journalist said that persistent false claims and harassment by cyber wreckers, including Gaseyeon, eventually forced them to submit a request for a leave of absence.
Businessman Eun Hyun-jang also claimed he was harmed as allegations spread that he was involved in remittances to North Korea and stock manipulation. He said that in the process, he even saw his company, with annual revenue of 10 billion won, fall apart.
To respond to the allegations surrounding him, Eun Hyun-jang launched a separate YouTube channel and tracked Kim Se-eui’s activities. He also acquired a 50% stake in shares sold by Gaseyeon and became embroiled in a management-control dispute.
The documentary covered these efforts to respond and the events leading up to Kim Se-eui’s arrest.
After the documentary was released, viewers said that institutional reforms were needed to prevent the harm caused by the spread of false allegations.
Some viewers called for tighter regulation of cyber wreckers, saying, “We must no longer stand by while a single lie destroys someone’s life” and “A strong institutional response is needed.”
