[Financial News] Actor Kim Soo-hyun’s side has stepped up its response, asking YouTube to shut down the Garo Sero Research Institute (hereafter, Gaseyeon) channel and remove related videos. It is calling for the platform to take active measures to prevent defamation caused by the spread of false information and further harm.
According to the JoongAng Ilbo on the 20th, Kim Soo-hyun’s side asked YouTube to shut down the Gaseyeon channel on the 6th, saying it had violated policies on harassment and cyberbullying.
On the 3rd, it also requested the removal of 30 videos related to Kim Soo-hyun. However, those videos remain publicly available.
Kim Soo-hyun’s legal representatives said, “An investigation confirmed allegations that Gaseyeon defamed and threatened the actor using false evidence, including AI-manipulated audio,” and stressed that the channel should be shut down promptly to put an end to secondary victimization. The argument is that a swift response from the platform is needed, as the harm could recur if content containing false information continues to circulate.
Previously, Gaseyeon CEO Kim Se-eui made claims in a YouTube broadcast to the effect that Kim Soo-hyun had been in a relationship with Kim Sae-ron since she was a minor, and that he had threatened her through a legal professional, leading to her death. Prosecutors determined that CEO Kim had disseminated false information with the intent to disparage Kim Soo-hyun, and indicted him while in custody last June.
Separately from the criminal proceedings, Kim Soo-hyun’s side is continuing its legal efforts to prevent the circulation of related content. It filed an application with the court on the 22nd of last month for the videos to be removed and their publication prohibited. A hearing in the case has been scheduled for the 4th of next month.
However, the related videos are expected to remain visible online until the court issues its decision. Kim Soo-hyun’s side maintains that further defamation and secondary victimization could occur while the content remains available. Accordingly, alongside pursuing separate legal proceedings apart from the investigative authorities’ determination, it is also asking YouTube to take active measures, including shutting down the channel and removing the videos.
Attention is focused not only on the court’s decision but also on how the platform will determine whether its policies have been violated.
