[Financial News] Comedian Lee Hyuk-jae, 54, who allegedly drove after drinking and struck a motorcycle waiting at a traffic light, has been referred to the prosecution on suspicion of drunk driving.
According to Yonhap News and other outlets on the 20th, Incheon Yeonsu Police Station said it had booked Lee without detention on suspicion of drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act and recently referred him to the Incheon Regional Prosecution Office.
Lee is suspected of driving after drinking and crashing into a motorcycle waiting at a traffic light at the intersection in front of the Korea Coast Guard headquarters in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, at around 10 p.m. on the 8th of last month.
Lee’s blood alcohol concentration, measured by police at the scene, was reportedly at least 0.03% but below 0.08%, a range that carries a license suspension.
The motorcycle rider, identified only as A and in their 20s, was reportedly not seriously injured.
In a phone call with Yonhap News at the time of the accident, Lee claimed he had driven after having one or two drinks while eating dinner at a restaurant 300 to 500 meters from his home.
Lee claimed, "I went out saying I wouldn’t drink during the meal, and the accident happened when the car moved forward as I bent down to pick up my phone after dropping it. While I was waiting to turn left, I bent down and didn’t see a delivery motorcycle pull in ahead of me."
He added, "After the accident, I reported it to the police myself, handled it through insurance, and said, ‘I would submit to questioning.’"
Police said when they booked Lee that they could also apply a charge of causing injury after confirming that the victim driver had been injured, but after the investigation they decided to apply only the drunk-driving charge.
A police official explained, "After investigating, we referred him on a drunk-driving charge alone, not on a charge of causing injury under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents."
